Cold War Materials

Scope and Contents

During the Cold War fear of war prompted the US government to encourage its citizens to build fallout shelters to help protect them from the effects of possible nuclear attacks. These materials which originated from the Office of Civil Defense, were intended to be used in the event of an emergency that required evacuation to the fallout shelters. The materials were meant to support a short stay only, though they provided everything from food and water rations to sanitation kits.

Despite the name most of this collection relates to the Department of Psychology, Counseling,and Guidance from 1980s-1990s. Most of the boxes are made up of binders from Psychology Workshops (1988-1998), materials relating to Fast Forward/Forword Training (1998), School of Education Policies and Procedures (1988-1989), Self-Study (1989-1991), and Psych Course Lists and Curriculum.

Copeland African American Museum Collection

Scope and Contents In 1989, Roy Copeland informed his wife, Cheryl, that he did not wish to select a gift for Christmas. Rather than doing this she decided to surprise him! For Christmas that year, she presented him with a seasonally wrapped box. Inside the box, to his surprise, was a set of autographed Muhammad Ali boxing gloves. Costello/Whitten Collection

Donated by Danielle Costello and Jessie Whitten. Folder contains a copy of their marriage license, the first issued to a same sex couple in Lowndes County after the Supreme Court ruling on June 26, 2015. Both are Valdosta State University Alumni and were employees of the university when the marriage took place. The marriage officiant was Dr. Fred Downing, the Department Head for Philosophy and Religious Studies. Also included is a newspaper article about their marriage.
